It can’t be easy to be Ashlee Simpson. Best known as Jessica’s more homely, lip-synching little sis, her music has been dismissed by anyone who’s not a 13-year-old girl. But it’s easily the most interesting thing about her. Sure, her second album is used-car-saleman slick, but be honest: If that wiry guitar line swaggering through her first single, “Boyfriend,” were shimmying off the new Franz Ferdinand album, you’d love it. The ballads are painfully maudlin and the lyrics just painful, but the songs are well-crafted and, believe it or not, Ashlee sings the hell out of most of them. Could she actually be the talented Simpson?
