If you don't know anything about Guided by Voices, Robert (Bob) Pollard, or "Dayton, Ohio—19 Something and 5," then you're missing out on arguably the most important indie rock songwriter of our time. Heavy words, sure, but as the creative force in Guided by Voices, Pollard secured himself as a lo-fi pop-rock godfather. But the man was literally guided by voices, and one single creative outlet wasn't going to be enough. So he formed a side label called Fading Captain in 1999 to put out all the songs he could sing. But over the last eight-plus years, it's become apparent that this label has put out material that rivals that of his Guided by Voices gig. If you own nothing from the Fading Captain series, then this two-disc, 56-song best-of is the perfect introduction.
