No band has better illustrated the phrase, "The whole is bigger than the sum of its parts." Without each other to kick around, front man Sting careened from soft rock to Jaguar commercials; drummer Stewart Copeland careened from esoteric film scores to Oysterhead, arguably the most dubious supergroup ever conceived; and guitarist Andy Summers just curled into a ball and waited for the Reunion Phone to ring. However, for six shining years in the late '70s and early '80s, the Police held their prodigious egos in check and wove punk, reggae, and pop into one of the greatest strings of chart-toppers in pop history. And then, like morons, they broke up. Still, the Police is a comprehensive overview of their creative peak; and it's a safe bet that most of these 28 songs will be dominating classic rock radio long after your carcass has been picked clean by maggots. Which should be any day now.
