Before MLIW rolled around the country in their ugly van, Iowa wasn't exactly known for producing top-notch hardcore bands. But these Marshalltown locals have continued their streak of excellent records with their latest full-length. Midnight in America is a departure from their last record, Witness, which many considered a departure from their debut. The songs are a lot more frenetic with faster tempos and a squeekier guitar sound, which do well to match the vocals. While the record makes for a great listen, this band really shines on the stage, where they have more energy, passion and anger than just about any band touring at the moment. Don't expect to learn the lyrics without checking out the booklet, but once you've picked it up you'll find that the words are smart and genuine, unlike whatever it is Avril Levine sings about. Ultimately, the kids who were expecting a great record from one of the best hardcore bands around shouldn't be disappointed, but rock radio fans picking it up on a whim might be a little let down with its lack of turntables or rapping.
