Asher Roth’s “I Love College” pays deft lyrical tribute to junior-year semiotics seminars, the Gay and Lesbian Student Coalition’s weekly meetings, and the vegan-option meal plan (quinoa, get at me). Just kidding! The hotly tipped stoner-rapper didn’t go to *that* kind of college. He went to the one with babes and beer pong and brosephs, broseph! Thing is, I’m not sure if the former option wouldn’t have made, counterintuitively, for much less boring subject matter.
“I Love College” tweaks the riff from Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” (a song about grappling with the devastating effects of alcoholism — which is why Rivers Cuomo wouldn’t clear a straight-up sample for a song about heavy boozin’) into a kind of hazy, pop-ska reverie. In the video, Roth does not try hard to be particularly likable: it begins with him sloughing a passed-out young woman off of his lap and on to the floor, and his face is capable of two modes: smirk and DUDE!
Some questions for debate:
*Did frat values, long a punch line, synonymous with neanderthal homoerotic douchebaggery, really need a champion? *Didn’t Old School already kinda do this, anyway, but with more heart and more Will Ferrell? *Isn’t glib misogyny much easier to swallow when the offender is a good natured goofball like Ludacris or a self-mocking shlub like T-Pain, and not a smug twerp?
