With Cash now 70 and ailing, every new album is greeted as if it could be his last. Pray that this isnt it. Producer Rick Rubins previous Cash collaborations created some profound results, but here his eccentric thumbprint is too distinct. A duet with Fiona Apple on Bridge Over Troubled Water is a cut-and-paste disaster, and Desperado, with ever-annoying Don Henley, is worse. But Cash being Cash, his originals are all up to snuff. Hang in there, Johnny, and next time walk your own line.
