Yesterday we reported on Operation Humble Kanye, Stephen Colbert's campaign to unseat Kanye West's album 808s and Heartbreak from the top spot on the iTunes charts and, in its place, install Colbert's latest album, the holiday-themed A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All. Colbert urged all members of his "nation" to storm the iTunes store at 5pm Eastern last night and purchase his album in droves. If enough copies were sold, Colbert would vault ahead of Kanye. It worked.
No, Colbert isn't in the Number 1 slot - that honor belongs to an LA singer named Britney Spears. But Colbert DID slip in front of Kanye. Colbert was (imagine Casey Kasem voice) up thirteen notches to Number 3, while Kanye was down a few notches to Number 4. Which means, of course, that Colbert has won the battle. The war, however? That's more of a long term thing.
It's a good bet that Colbert may take a minute, or ten, to point out this new development on tonight's broadcast.
Perhaps he'll even note that even with bonus tracks, Kanye couldn't keep up the pace. And also that he (Colbert), while placing below Britney's deleuxe version, was six spots ahead of the regular Britney album. And how fitting is it that Akon's Freedom is all that stands between Colbert and Britney. Perhaps a new operation is in order.
