Billy Bragg and the Blokes
Star Rating:
★★
After the Americana of his Mermaid Avenue collaborations with Wilco, proletarian popster Billy Bragg has returned home. His latest explores what it means to be from England, a concept we’re having difficulty caring less about. It’s not the subject matter that sinks the album, though—it’s Bragg’s attempts to augment his sturdy folk rock with a multicultural mishmash. He gets away with reggae, but the stabs at soul and world-beat sound like stuff he found in Peter Gabriel’s trash.
