Fever

To say Kylie Minogue is big in Britain doesn’t really do justice to the cultural hold the 30-somethingish Australian pop tart has over the UK. Each of her 32 singles have hit the Top 20 there, and in fact, her new album, Fever, is already double platinum in the land of tea and crumpets. Well, as they say, there’s no accounting for taste. Kylie’s specialty is mindless pop drivel, and Fever is chock-full of it. She sings OK, but as songs like “More More More” and “Give It To Me” hang coy sexual innuendo on passable dance beats, there’s little to distinguish Kylie from your standard-issue pop diva. The longevity of her career somehow defies the seemingly disposable nature of her music, engendering frequent comparisons to Madonna. But where the weight of Madonna’s personality usually directs her musical roller coaster wherever it goes, Kylie merely seems to be along for the ride.
