50 Foot Wave
Since more or less dissolving her pioneering 90s indie-rock outfit Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh has made a handful of solo albums that have tended toward the downbeat and acoustic. But Hershs latest project, 50 Foot Wave, is a full-throttle, high-volume punk-metal blast. The opener sets the pace: emerging from behind ferocious riffs and brawny drumming, Hershs voice already sounds shredded, rasping out angst-filled lines like a 16-year-old hardcore kid. Bone China is a breathless, harrowing punk sprint, and Petal carves out a sludgy stoner metal groove that Queens Of The Stone Age would be proud to call their own. While it might seem odd for a woman nearing 40 to kick out the jams with such fury, Golden Ocean suggests that maybe it shouldnt be.
