Kicking Television: Live in Chicago

“You’re back in your old neighborhood,” Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy sings, as he opens the band’s first live album. The lyric is both literal and figurative: The two-CD set was recorded in Tweedy’s hometown, but it also finds him reconciling his band’s alt-country roots with their more recent experimental jags. If anything, hearing the flailing, feedback-drenched 1996 stomp, “Misunderstood,” and the flailing, feedback-drenched 2004 stomp “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” bookend this performance really just proves that the more the band changes, the more the band stays the same.
