★★★½
The Supersuckers are mostly known as the loudest, ass-kickin’est, drug-doin’est rock band on the planet, but this, their first live album, shows off their, er, softer side. The loosey-goosey Must’ve Been Live is culled from a handful of “country” shows the Supersuckers have done through the years. The band’s affection for the dark, grizzled world of classic country music has bubbled to the surface in the past on their collaborations with Willie Nelson and Steve Earle, and warm, twangy, laid-back treats like “Roamin’ Round” and “Roadworn and Weary” make it clear that the affection is genuine. “The Captain” finds them picking up the tempo a bit for a Social Distortion–style romp, while the catalog of decadence detailed on “Hungover Together” and “Non-Addictive Marijuana” are evidence the ’suckers aren’t really going all that soft. There’s probably about five more tracks here than are really necessary, but the Supersuckers have always dealt in excess—why should this record be any different?
