Originality is overrated. Case in point: The debut from Atlanta band the Hiss, which manages to make a number of familiar rock moves feel fresh. Everyone rips off Zeppelin, but few do it as well as these guys on the wild-eyed “Riverbed.” Meanwhile, “Clever Kicks” is a garage-rock shake that would make the Stooges proud. Oasis producer Owen Morris is behind the boards here, so it’s no shock when soaring rock epics like “Step Aside” and “Triumph” serve as reminders of what was so invigorating about the Gallagher brothers’ second album. Elsewhere, “Back on the Radio” is snarling hard rock, complete with screeching guitar licks and the potent howls of frontman Adrian Barrera, while “Not for Hire” is as good as angry rock’n’roll stomps get. There’s a reckless abandon to the way the Hiss throw themselves at these songs, and the result is a big, loud, badass rock record they can be damn proud of.
