On his recent reunion tour with the E Street Band, Springsteen showed more spirit than he had in years. But 9/11 affected the Boss deeply, and Rising bears the scars. We expected the American icon to pen odes to fallen heroes (Into the Fire) and lost loved ones. Unfortunately, these tunes are more heartfelt than inspired, and the somber vibe overshadows brilliant new material like the rousing Marys Place. His best since Born in the U.S.A.? Yes. But with a bit less eulogizing, it couldve lifted all our spirits.
