On last night’s premiere of The Amazing Race Season 19 there was one major difference between this year’s incarnation and Season 1, which premiered ten years ago: a team of former Vegas Showgirls was saved by Twitter. Yes, even before the contestants departed from Los Angeles, one of the ladies left her passport at a gas station where it was found by some guy with a lot of Twitter followers and, before you knew it, he tracked the ladies down to LAX and saved the day in 140 characters or less.
The lesson here? Social media is useful- useful beyond coming to the aid of dummies, one would hope. Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, and Barack Obama are amongst the top ten most popular people on Twitter. Unfortunately only one of these people actually posts things that matter. Here are some popular topics that celebrities like to share with their minions ranging from the completely mundane to those designed to “unintentionally” make you feel like scum. Just something to think about before you think Twitter will save your ass or make you smarter.
Going to the Dentist
Perpetrators Include: Kim Kardashian, 50 Cent, Mark Salling, Chad Ochocinco
Going to the dentist is part of life and not something everyone feels the need to announce. It’s part of celebrities’ lives, too, and it seems they really like to announce it. Only they’re paying top dollar to have their veneers fixed while you’re weeping about your $100 cavity-filling co-pay.
Perpetrators Include: Diddy, Katy Perry, Tori Spelling, LeAnn Rimes
Most of the time instead of posting photos of meals at five star restaurants, celebrities like to showcase how ‘normal’ they are by what they eat. Diddy is scrambling his own eggs for Gods sake! Also: the skinnier the starlet, the more she’ll post about what she eats. I.e. For example, on September 9th Leann Rimes had a southern style-breakfast and Greek food for dinner, including five baklavas, in case you were interested.
Spoiling Their Pets
Perpetrators Include: John Legend, Chelsea Handler, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus
Pretending to be ‘just like us’ starts to fail when celebrities post photos of their cats getting room service and dogs traveling in private jets. Or when it comes to taking a bath in swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen’s lap (shared by her boyfriend and dog owner, John Legend).
Going to the Game
Perpetrators Include: Cory Monteith, Karina Smirnoff, Justin Bieber, Jeremy Piven
We live in a time where a guy from Glee gets up-close tickets to the Super Bowl…probably for free. Sure, we've come to terms with the fact that famous people get the best seats in the house, but why would you want them to smear their good time in your face? Do you want to know every time Justin Bieber – a Canadian- sits courtside at the Lakers game?
Hanging Out with Justin Bieber
Perpetrators Include: Rihanna, Shaq, Lil Wayne, Usher
Speaking of Justin Bieber, you haven’t truly made it in the Twitter-verse until you post a photo with him. So if you want to see this guy dining with Rihanna, kissing Katy Perry, or kicking back with Shaq go ahead and be proud to be a follower.
