I was going to run a picture of guys wrestling, but I figured you'd like this better. |
As NASCAR looks to limit retaliation on the track and brawling in the pits, drivers will be forced to settle their scores in another setting. I was thinking of dueling pistols at dawn, but Hermie Sadler has a better idea: he's rented an abandoned building across from Martinsville's Speedway's famous paper clip track to host a special TNA wrestling event this Saturday night. He and Fox announcer Jeff Hammond will step into the ring while other drivers will also be on hand. I caught up with Hermie this week to get his thoughts on Jeff Gordon's fighting skills and who would win a battle off the trackHermie or his brother Elliott.
You're the promoter for these matches, but you're also going to wrestle. Have you ever wrestled before?
I appeared on the very first pay-per-view event TNA ever did, about three or four years ago in Huntsville, Ala. I got beat up pretty good, but I had a good time.
You're trying to qualify for this weekend's race too. Isn't it kind of dangerous to get beat up in the ring before you get beat up on the track?
I know my limitations. I am not going to be doing any summersaults or anything like that. I am going to keep it simple.
Who's the NASCAR driver you'd least like to face in the ring?
I've never fought any of them, but from the looks of him, I wouldn't want to tussle with Carl Edwards.
With his acrobatic moves, he'd probably be pretty tough off the top rope.
He's got leaping ability and arms bigger than Goldberg. I'd say he's a pretty tough cat. He's way into weight lifting. Any time someone walks around a race track all day eating nothing but bananas, you know they're healthy. I'm more of a steak and potatoes and Mountain Dew guy.

What about your brother, can you beat him up?
He's bigger and stronger than I am, but I can run faster.
There was plenty of bad blood last week after Bristol. As a wrestling expert, what did you think of Jeff Gordon's technique?
I think he needs to work on that a little bit. I've got my people working on adding another match to the card Saturday night if he and Matt Kenseth want to get into the ring. We've just got to get Jeff to take his helmet off so it can be a fair fight.
What about a steel cage match between Kevin Harvick and Busch?
Maybe we can get Kevin Harvick and Jimmy Spencer to fight Kurt Busch in a handicap matchI am not sure if those guys really want to fight, but if they do, I can provide a ring for them. They won't get fined over there because they are on private property. NASCAR would have nothing to do with it.
If you were picking a dream four-man tag team of NASCAR drivers, what three guys would you want on your side?
I'd take my brother, 'cause he's my brother, and Carl Edwards, 'cause he's a tough dude. Then I'd take Dale Jr. because then we'd have lots of beer afterwards. You've got to get the right sponsor.
Hmmm
you don't want Kurt Busch and his endless supply of Miller Lite? I wonder why?
Catch Hermie Salder and a host of other NASCAR drivers including Mark Martin, Kyle Petty, Elliott Sadler, Scott Riggs, and Sterling Marlin on Saturday night in the old Lowe's building across from Martinsville Speedway. Hermie's next wrestling event tied to a race weekend will occur the weekend of May 28 near Charlotte before the Coca-Cola 600.
