Coincidence, says the NHL. Mere coincidence that the 2009 NHL All-Star Game is being held in Montreal—designed as a weekend-long salute to the oldest and winningest franchise in league history--and, currently, all six roster spots for the Eastern Conference are going to be held by Canadiens players according to fan votes.
Ardent fans? Maybe. Vote-rigging "bots" set by Internet-savvy Habitants? Most likely. It's not that Montreal isn't having a decent year, it's just that... they are by no means as dominant as this turnout would suggest, and half these guys wouldn't be seeing All-Star ice time if the game were being held in Columbus.
Kovalev, Koivu, and Tanguay are all having fine seasons—but better than Sidney the Kid (25 points in 20 games) and Alex Ovechkin (literally hoisting the Capitals on his shoulders every night?) Hell, Thomas Vanek is currently tied for the lead league in goals alongside Philadelphia's Jeff Carter (who isn't even being represented). Suspicious? Perhaps.
OK, now it gets a bit more bigdickulous. Andrei Markov's two goals and 13 assists are pretty decent for a D-man, but not when 10 other defensemen from around the league are head-and-shoulders above him. Dan Boyle is only four points behind Joe Thornton—offensively-gifted centerman Joe Thornton—on the San Jose Sharks, and this guy's suppose to be stopping scoring chances. Whither Nashville's all-around powerhouse Shea Weber? Or Anaheim's Chris Pronger? And Komisarek has not only played a mere 14 games (he's currently out with an injury), but he's amassed a staggering one goal and zero assists in that time. That's one point, to you math magicians.
And finally, the goalies. In only his second full season, Price is currently hanging onto a decent 9-4-0-3 record, a 2.42 goals-against average, and a .920 save percentage. Impressive, but 368,927 votes impressive? Tim Thomas...see him? Waaaay down at the bottom? He's only got a 9-2-0-3 record, a 1.80 goals against average, and a .944 save percentage, not to mention he's currently got Boston (a team no one expected much from this year) in first place. Oh, and he's not even on the ballot—he's a write-in candidate. The plot thickens...
