What really went down in Dallas?
Who knows? It’s the million-dollar question. I’m over it.
Are you concerned about how the season will go in Buffalo?
If anything happens out of the ordinary, it’s not going to be my fault. The media’s unfairness has never prevented me from doing everything I can for my team. They talked about me dropping balls in Dallas. Meanwhile, I broke my hand in the second game of the season. Later I tore a tendon in the same hand. I played through all of it. Back in Philly, when I had to rehab my foot, I played in the Super Bowl even though I was advised not to. It was my
career on the line.
What do you think is the average fan’s perception of you?
Certainly more negative than positive. I’ve done a lot of charitable work, but no one talks about it. Guys like Reggie Bush, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, if they do a food drive, they make headlines. When I was in Philadelphia, I took
it upon myself to go visit the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and no one said a word.
Has being a lightning rod for criticism affected the way people look at your on-field achievements?
Regardless of what people think, they can’t deny what I’ve done. And everything
I’ve achieved has been through pure hard work. I see a lot of guys who are celebrated, who used performance-enhancing drugs to do some of the things I’ve done on
the field. I know what I’ve done is legit.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I was one of the most honest people who
ever played the game.
Have you done anything in the NFL you regret?
I don’t regret anything. Would I have done some things differently?
Yes, absolutely. I’m not perfect. I’ve made mistakes. I’m sure I’ll make them again.
