You had one interception last year. Would it kill you to grab a pick?
In six games I didn’t see one pass. When you’re being avoided by quarterbacks, it’s a good thing, but it can be frustrating. You’re dominating, but there’s no ball coming. I’ve tried playing possum a couple of times, but then they throw your way and catch you sleeping. My mindset is always that they’re coming after me on the next play.

If you never touch the ball, how do you avoid being bored to tears?

I’m the prankster in the locker room. I’ve put snakes in people’s lockers, taped up helmets, left water bottles unscrewed. [Free safety] Michael Huff is the best sport about it. I will continue to trick him for the rest of my life because he lets everything roll off his back.

Tom Cable is your fifth coach in six years, but the one constant has been Al Davis. What’s it like to play for the NFL’s most, um, unconventional owner?
A piece of me likes the fact that we’re always counted out because people think Al has lost it. But I’m a firm believer in him. He was criticized for drafting Howie Long, for drafting me—everyone was saying, “Who the hell is this guy?” You have to revel in proving somebody wrong. I love that about Al Davis. His whole life has been proving people wrong.

And signing huge checks. Your three-year, $45.3 million contract made you the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. How did you reward yourself?
When I got drafted, I bought a small house and a Mercedes. That stuff still works just fine. My teammates get pissed off. They say, “Your lifestyle annoys me. You have too much money to live in such meager accommodations.” I’ll invest where I can sustain and grow.

Those smarts earned you an invitation to the Clinton Global Initiative this year. What’s it like to get up close and personal with Bubba?
He’s got enormous hands, as if he played rugby or something. And he will let you know with his grip that he is your superior.
