Game 7 Fever Continues Into The NHL Playoffs’ Second Round

“Defense wins championships” was never more true.

Goalkeeping was the word last night as two brilliant young goalies led their teams deeper into the second round. First, Carey Price – staring elimination in the face – forced the Bruins into a Game 7 with his fourth career playoff shutout. Max Pacioretty broke his slump with a goal and an assist, and Thomas Vanek scored twice, getting some measure of revenge for a certain Bruin taking him out of the 2010 playoffs.

On the other coast, John Gibson posted another good performance against the Kings, giving up three goals on 42 shots. The 20-year-old was given the starting job after Bruce Boudreau played all three of his goalkeepers, finally settling on Gibson and looking like a bit of a genius for doing so. The Kings are a hard team to put away though (ask the Sharks), and they’re facing their fifth elimination game of the playoffs.

The Rangers and Pens will finish their series tonight and the Wild will make a case for a game 7 as well. If you look at the law of averages, we’re in for a thrilling end to at least a series or two.
