In his second life, Benson Henderson witnesses Satan waging a war against all of Earth, intent on eliminating all of God's minions and installing himself as second in command of everything in the universe.

Thankfully, Benson (Ben, for short) is a pretty damn good mixed martial arts fighter, or else we'd think he's a real weirdo. The 155-pounder with a toothpick seemingly glued to his mouth and hardly a chip on his shoulder is as workmanlike as one could possibly get in a sport involving flying knees and spinning fists. Even if much of his day consists of reading through books dealing with the destruction of the planet.

Explaining in detail the plot of the book he's currently reading, The War in Heaven by Kenneth Ziegler, Ben is not shy about declaring himself a loser.

"I don't go out or do anything super cool or fun. I like to stay home and read," he said.

If his last few outings indicate his prowess in the cage, we wouldn't exactly be first in line to tease him for his introversion. He's won eight fights in a row and will be a main event draw this weekend, facing Donald Cerrone for the Interim Lightweight Championship at WEC 43.

Not bad for someone who's the anti-Brock Lesnar, in more ways than one. Soft-spoken in nearly every aspect of his life, Ben's fight game is equally as silent, but a whole lot deadlier. Out of his nine wins in the cage, six have come via submission, a feat he attributes to his wrestling background.

"You need to be versed in all forms of mixed martial arts, but I'm a little baised; I think wrestling is a strong base and gives you a very big advantage," Ben said. "But, what a lot of younger fighters are missing is knowing how to compete, knowing how to get in there and, if you lose, knowing how to train for the next two months. Train harder, smarter, and go back in there and do it again."

Which is why the two-time NAIA collegiate All-American isn't afraid to mix it up with someone the caliber of Cerrone, even if the money is overwhelmingly against him. (Bodog has Ben as a +275 underdog.) He's confident, but not overly, and he's not into the Kabuki dance of training to counter an opponent's strengths.

"If it's not broke, don't fix it," he said. "He's doing the same things I'm doing. It's just a matter of not going through the motions and getting the most our of your practice."

His work ethic, along with the obvious visual resemblance, is why he doesn't take it personally when his friends tease him for looking like Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. "He's a pretty good dude at what he does, so hopefully I can be as good at what I do."
