Free music is the best kind, especially when you can get it legally and don't have to worry about the RIAA kicking down your door and killing your dog for downloading the new M.I.A. record. The much-hyped Slacker is based on Web radio stations similar to Last.fm and Pandora, in that it tries to predict what you'll like. After you've let the Slacker software dig deep into your musical tastes, you can send songs directly to the 4 GB portable player, which I got to see in person for the first time tonight. The hardware isn't the most stylish gadget on the block, but if it will wirelessly download new music for me without requiring me to pay for it, I don't care if it's uglier than my room service bill at the end of this week. Its release was recently delayed, but hopefully it'll ship sooner than later. The software is live now on their Web site if you'd like to give it a try. Just be careful, it can pick up on even the slightest fondness for Wilson Phillips. Click the link for more photos
