The Car: Infiniti Essence (concept car)

Infiniti celebrated its 20th anniversary by unveiling the Essence concept car recently at the Geneva auto show in Switzerland. This peek into Infiniti’s future has our tongues’ wagging and hands longing to grip the wheel of this shiny, shapely beauty. It’s a front-engined, two-seat, nearly 600-horsepower, rear-wheel drive luxury coupe that offers sexy lines from any angle.

The tire-squealing power comes from two sources: a 3.7-liter DOHC V6 gasoline engine fitted with twin turbochargers that produce 434 horsepower, and an electric motor which cranks out another 158. The motors can work independently or together as a parallel hybrid system. In other words, you can run the electric motor for no-emission driving between congested stoplights, or you can unleash all 600 ponies if the need arises. And trust us, the need always arises.

An Infiniti rep says that the car is indeed just a “concept” but expects that some elements of the Essence will make their way into production vehicles in the near future. With the promise of style, power and gas-thriftiness, we’re hoping that a lot of this becomes reality.
