This artsy rock goddess talks her new music project, guilty pleasures, and her taste in men.
Tell us about your new album JAN and what it sounds like.
It is a new project; I started it right after moving to New York from LA. In terms of the sound I think people kind of have to decide for themselves. It’s hard to be objective about that type of thing. I would say people would put it in the category of post-punk, art-rock.
Who are some of your musical inspirations?
I would say I am more inspired by visual art and the city and not so much influenced by other music. I go see as much artwork as possible while I’m traveling and I feel like that informs my songwriting much more than actually listening to music.
You definitely have an artsy edge! What made you take that route instead of a “Top 40” sound?
I’ve always made music that sounds like me, so to speak. I have three releases with my other band, Eagle and Talon. My songwriting style was never a conscious choice; it is just the kind of music I write. Top 40 music isn’t in me; it’s not a part of my world.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I have a lot of guilty pleasures! I love pain au chocolat (chocolate croissants).
Do you have a celebrity crush?
Louis C.K. Balding, red-hair, overweight, that’s my type!
What is your signature drink?
I like cocktails; a drink I would make would be a vodka-soda with some muddled strawberries and mint leaves or something.
What’s one thing you want to do before you die?
I want to feel satisfied.
If you were on Death Row what would be the last meal you would want to eat?
Some of my mom’s cooking - her experimental cooking, like borscht. My mom is Lithuanian so she makes all kinds of eastern European food.
