Ice Climber Conquers Niagara Falls

A feat as impressive as it was photogenic.

Will Gadd, one of the most respected ice climbers on Earth, was looking for a challenge. He found it last week when Horseshoe Falls, part of the Niagara Falls system, froze solid. Starting in the basin along the U.S.-Canadian border, Gadd worked his way upwards over 140 feet of ice blocks and hidden obstacle. The climb was further complicated by the varied thickness of the ice, some of which was strong enough to take Gadd’s weight and some of which wasn’t.
