Seeing how little thought the major networks are putting into their programming, the Cartoon Network is giving the ol’ bloopers, practical jokes, and technical gaffes show format a try. It shouldn’t have. The idea of reanimating stuttered lines, hysterical laughing fits, and multiple takes of the same scene quickly loses any appeal it could have had due to Funniest Bloopers’ lame execution. Seeing classic cartoon characters like Fred Flintstone and George Jetson managing muffed scenes is funny for a very short while. But before you can say, “Pass the bong,” a succession of doctored clips from newer shows like The Powerpuff Girls slow the momentum to a crawl. What’s worse, this hour-long show runs out of material early and limps to the finish line with best-of montages of Wile E. Coyote and Daffy Duck anvil encounters. Cartoons are funny, so are unscripted fuck-ups. But cartoons force-feeding flubs? Not so much.
