Take The Count of Monte Cristo, replace the French political intrigue with an apocalyptic dose of dating anxiety, and cast some photogenic twentysomethings. That’s Valentine, the first studio feature for the WB’s Angel, David Boreanaz.
Based on Tom Savage’s book Valentine: A Novel, the Warner Bros. thriller could be Revenge of the Nerds as rewritten by body-count king Wes Craven. Four vicious college girls play a prank on an unpopular freshman, but the fun spins quickly out of control. The nerd gets expelled and then kills his abusive parents, which lands him in the pokey for a long, brutal stretch.
Fast-forward 10 years and the murderous dork is now a successful, charismatic writer (Boreanaz) who has a little trouble letting go of the past. Having offed three of his four tormentors on successive Valentine’s Days, he has one more date before his vengeance is complete.
