MTV has come up with a novel solution to help war-torn, disease-addled Africa: Send celebrities! What could be better than Bono wandering around telling people he’s a rock star and Chris Tucker’s nonstop dancing (which both amused and offended the locals)? There are also two students along for the ride, whose responsibilities consist only of stating the plans for each day. The presentation is respectful of the serious topic, but MTV’s overbearing presence remains—is Ludacris really the right music for a special on a country being torn apart by AIDS? Don’t miss the scene in which Bono explains to a feigning-interest Tucker where dreadlocks came from—it’s always fun to see an Irishman lecturing a black man about the Rastafarians. If you know nothing about what’s going on in Africa, this isn’t a bad place to start—just be prepared for the TRL soundtrack.
