The depth of Frank Herberts internal mythology is what made the novelDune so enduring. Stunning as it was to look at, the 1984 Dune feature film was an indecipherable mess that left even loyal fans of the books scratching their heads. The Sci-Fi Channels sprawling miniseries isnt as visually audacious as the movie, but the heady themes and political maneuverings miraculously survive this adaptation.
The writing and acting are top-flight, every bit the equal of Herberts multi-millennial space epic. Baron Harkonnen is a villain of almost Shakespearean proportions, even ending his scenes with sinister rhymed couplets aimed right at the camera. Sure, there are men in very funny hats and pale dorks that hiss like lizards, but thats just par for this type of course. And its part of the fun. This television event will satisfy the faithful and maybe even win a few new converts.
