Like any right-thinking person, youre probably still fuming over the great Blair Witch swindle. Scariest movie ever? Yeah, and Bette is the funniest new sitcom of the season. So when you hear that a Blair Witch producer is behind Foxs Freakylinks, youre afraid all right. But for the wrong reasons.
Relax. Its a good, scary show. Sure, it tries a little too hard to show you what a bunch of loveable slackers the heroes areHey, man, Im just a surfer trying to keep corn flakes on the table is a typical line. But once the action shifts from sunburned Florida twentysomethings to the spooky stuff, its a fun ride.
The pilot, like most pilots, a heavy on the exposition. We meet Derek Barnes (Ethan Embry), whose twin brother Adam ran an occult research web site. Derek pitches in with fieldwork in local go-go bars, investigating rumors of spontaneously combusting lap dancers. Nice work if you can get it.
When Adam dies under mysterious circumstances, beach bum Derek suddenly finds a purpose in lifehe re-christens the site freakylinks.com and dedicates himself to investigating the unexplained. (Like, maybe, how he funds his operations? Theres a mystery for ya.) Together with a smartalecky partner (Karim Prince), a beautiful webmaster (Lizette Carrion) and his dead brothers ex-fiancee (Lisa Sheridan), he scours the countryside in search of paranormal phenomena. Isnt anybody thinking about ad sales? How do they keep this site running?
Left alone, untroubled by the hype machine, Freakylinks could be a solidly entertaining hour of creepy fun, a sort of X-Files for Generation Y. But The X-Files began as a quietly culty favorite before breaking out as a hit. Lets hope Fox gives Freakylinks a chance to find its audience.
