The fact that animation runs humor circles around any live-action sitcom is nothing new (The Simpsons have ruled the roost for years, and relative newcomers King of the Hill and Family Guy are more entertaining than anything out of either Will or Grace’s mouth). And now Cartoon Network has quietly produced a string of shows that take it even further. Their “Adult Swim” line-up proves that a steady diet of pot makes for some good TV—Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021—and that things don’t have to make sense to be funny.

One of their newest additions (not counting the two promo episodes that ran last season) is Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law and it’s one of the funniest things we’ve ever seen. Essentially the old Hanna-Barbara superhero Birdman reimagined as a lawyer who takes on cartoon-related cases (in the season premiere, he defended Shaggy and Scooby-Doo after they’re arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession—sensing a pattern here?), Harvey Birdman defies any other categorization. The only thing we can say with certainty is that it’s hysterical. Stay up late Sunday night and treat yourself.
