History versus Hollywood? Forget the confrontational title, the new History Channel series performs more like History Takes Hollywood Out for Ice Cream. After movies like U-571 and Pocahontas proved that Hollywood execs think of history as a first-draft screenplay, youd think the tone here would be harsh. No such luck.
Facts are presented to detail the truths and exaggerations of M*A*S*H, The French Connection, Patton, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in a drowsy, professorial tone. Is taking liberties with history irresponsible, or is artistic license necessary to save these stories for the future? No one seems to really care that much. What a missed opportunity for righteous indignation!
