King of the Hill (Season 5 Premiere)

Opening its fifth season, King of the Hill feels like Wonder Years as interpreted by David Lynch. We find 13-year-old Bobby standing in a Hot Springs alley holding cash and heart pills for his father’s boss (who’s losing a backroom craps game), while a white-trash couple nearby alternately makes out and pukes. And when a friend confesses that he dreamed of Hank Hill in clear plastic underwear, you wonder what Mike Judge is smoking. How he makes this show seem warm-hearted is some kind of magic trick.
