Military Diaries gives an inside look into the lives of soldiers involved in Operation Enduring Freedom. The daily diaries—following everyone from pilots flying missions over Afghanistan to office workers—give the troops a chance to talk about what they are doing there, their families at home, and—here comes the musical tie-in with VH1—the tunes they listen to to get them through their stay overseas. Footage you won’t catch on CNN (an exhausted pilot upset with his unavoidable three months without sex, ground troops putting together the sweetest “Ice, Ice, Baby” dance routine since Vanilla himself) gives a good perspective on how these soldiers stay sane. Without getting overly emotional, this special plays more as a straight documentary, keeping it effective and allowing us to see how soldiers really cope with their situation.
