Radio On The TV: Week Of April 27, 2009

You may or may not have heard that Tonight Show host Jay Leno called in sick to work on Thursday and Friday, prompting the network to run reruns. Leno had never before missed a scheduled show, so it must have been somewhat serious; it was certainly serious enough for Leno to get himself checked out at a hospital. Leno is back now, and tonight the show must go on. What's the upshot of all this? For the second week in a row, we get to talk about '90s swing revivalist curiosities Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They were originally scheduled to be on last Thursday's show. Can you imagine the disappointment in hearing the show you're scheduled to perform on won't be happening? And you hear it that day? Of course, NBC could have brought in a guest host, but execs were likely scared of Leno and his ego, which is reportedly larger than in his chin.

The Tonight Show is also the place for the week's other major curiosity: an artist named Country Bones. According to his MySpace, Country Bones "plays hard-driving Americana truck-driving music familiar to fans who love classic bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Hamilton IV and Dave Dudley." Dave Dudley's fans are certainly familiar with that style of music! It would be easy to make fun of Country Bones, since that is one lame official bio opener, and also since Country Bones only has 42 lone MySpace friends. But then again, he is apparently being joined by childhood friend Richard Fortus, who currently plays in Guns n' Roses, played with the Psychedelic Furs and was later a founding member of Furs offshoot Love Spit Love, and is one of the baddest guitarists around. So it might be good. But then again, Country Bones has confederate flags all over his page, even though he's from Missouri, so maybe it won't be good.
