Radio On The TV: Week of May 4, 2009

Another week, another set of major label biggies on the Tonight Show. Jay wins the legends category this week with Wednesday's Van Morrison appearance. Van the Man will be playing a song from Astral Weeks, the revival of which has been his thing for the past year. Will it be "Sweet Thing"? "The Way Young Lovers Do"? It can't be "Madame George"... can it? And on Friday, Jewel is on. It's 2009—why is Jewel on?

Letterman has his usual fairly eclectic mix—Kanye's on tonight for a Keri Wilson collabo, tomorrow it's a Glaswegian party with Franz Ferdinand, Thursday indie overlords Animal Collective twiddle knobs, and Friday, the ever-controversial Chris Cornell shows up to screech over Timbaland's phat beats.

Over at Late Night, Fallon's bookers maintain their indie cred with The National on Wednesday and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings on Tuesday. Both artists were involved with last night's star-studded (Bon Iver, Feist, David Byrne) Dark Was The Night show at Radio City Music Hall.

Today's late night classic is a blistering Rockin' In The Free World by Neil Young on Saturday Night Live in 1989. Band includes Crazy Horse member Frank Sampedro and session drummer/producer extraordinaire Steve Jordan. Check out Neil's Elvis shirt. And the Toronto Maple Leafs patch on his jeans. Did you know Neil's dad Scott Young was an award-winning hockey writer? You do now. One of the all-time great SNL musical performances:
