What do you know about East Los Angeles? Probably no more than you can remember from watching Cheech Marin’s Born in East L.A. on cable one night when you couldn’t sleep. The predominantly Latino neighborhood has become a punch line, the Bronx of the West Coast.

Fortunately, Showtime looks beyond the chulo/gangbanger/mariachi stereotypes with the new dramatic series Resurrection Blvd. The Santiagos are a Mexican-American family eager to move up in life or, at the very least, not get moved down. New York Undercover’s Michael DeLorenzo stars as Carlos, a promising middleweight boxer. His auto mechanic father has high hopes for his son’s title shot, but is also haunted by the mute figure of his older brother, an ex-boxer who suffered permanent brain damage in the ring.

The family and neighborhood scenes are well observed, and DeLorenzo shows some chops in the boxing ring. Cheech Marin and Paul Rodriguez bob up in what almost feel like obligatory “and as” roles, but they’re both surprisingly effective. It’s a trick for comic actors to leave their comfortable shtick behind and still turn in amusing performances, but they hold their own in a strong ensemble.
