Does Chris Isaak, crooner extraordinaire, have the acting chops to carry his own show? Sort of. He’s got a ton of natural charisma, some sparkling writing on the show, and a great supporting cast to compensate for his relative inexperience. He’s obviously chosen his friends wisely—The Chris Isaak Show is a blast.

Isaak plays himself here like Mr. Rogers as raised by Elvis. He approaches his strange sex life rather sweetly, insisting that men just want to be loved. In the premiere it’s a tolerable moment—he does, after all, say it to a luscious naked woman on a bed-like merry-go-round. Anyone who doesn’t tune in for that alone, needs their pulse checked.
