Denis Leary, the real Denis Leary, returns at last. No Disney movies, no cameos, no more monologues about his kids. This is the Leary from No Cure for Cancer, filtered through a cop-show format that’s got just the right tone.

The supporting ensemble (especially Keith David from There’s Something About Mary) provide great chemistry and balance. But Leary, overcoming a gunman by screaming “Just shoot me!” after taking phone calls from his estranged wife and ridiculous girlfriend, leads the show with a weary vengeance. Nihilism and nicotine, welcome back.
