Three years ago, the Fox network passed on a quirky action hour called Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You may have heard of it since its premiere on the WB.
Could history repeat itself this season, when Michigan J. Frog snaps up another Fox castoff, Eddie Murphys The PJs? Fox buried the scurrilous, scandalous claymation sitcom midway through last season, and the show was MIA when the network announced its fall slate.
It could be the missing ingredient in the WBs lineup, which lacks a half-hour laffer. The season premiere finds conniving building superintendent Thurgood Orenthal Stubbs (Murphy) on to another quick-cash scheme. When a tobacco company rents billboard space on his housing-project building, Thurgood turns a tidy illicit profit. But theres a moral here, in among all the politically incorrectand hysterically funnyslapstick and one-liners.
Whatever the outcome, executive producer Tony Krantz is ecstatic over the move. And if the WB stays true to formdoing the opposite of what Fox does seems to work for themthey could grow The PJs into another hit. (The PJs moves to Sundays, starting September 10.)
