It’s nice to have a break from all the robbery-homicide-courtroom-medical-school-in-space shows. After missing much of last season, we picked up on Smallville this summer and were impressed. Unlike other junky teen shows, this has a great superhero premise, fun cheesy effects, and Lana Lane (Kristin Kruek), who is so damn cute. Last season ended with a tornado, a reporter trying to expose Clark Kent (Tom Welling) as a superhero, and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) about to let his dad die. If you’ve never watched before, it’s one of the easiest shows on TV to pick up instantly. It’s also ideal when you’re at a stalemate over what to watch with your girlfriend. After one episode she’ll not only be hooked, she may also be willing to let you drone on about comics. At times Smallville gets a bit sappy, but if we had to choose between an hour of superhijinks or five minutes of Girls Club, there’s no choice at all. In fact, we’d sooner jam a shard of Kryptonite in the fleshy part of our collective necks than endure even five seconds of Girls Club.
