NBC needs another drama from the halls of justice like TV needs another reality show from halls of Fox. But The Lyon’s Den has something that all of those other Law & Order rehashings don’t: Rob Lowe. Hot off chapter eight in the David Caruso Handbook, Lowe flees the comfy confines of The West Wing for the relative obscurity of The Den’s central character, John “Jack” Turner, a lawyer entrenched in a battle between his former pro bono clinic and the established firm that he now helps rook big-timers as a managing partner. Backstabbing and hidden pasts run so rampant that, rather than worrying about who’s out for justice, we can concentrate on who’s screwing whom. (These are lawyers we’re talking about.) It’s not hard to make intriguing characters out of politicians and attorneys, and The Lyon’s Den milks its grimy characters for all of the subplots it can muster. All of our trips to court should be this satisfying.
