Baseball is taking all kinds of publicity beanballs this spring, but The Winning Season disgraces Americas pastime more than Barry Bonds expanding head ever will. When a youngster who cant hack it in the little leagues (Shawn Hatosy) finds a Honus Wagner baseball card, it takes him back to 1909 to hang with the legend (Matthew Modine). Hokey baseball movies are one thing, but after some warm-hearted bonding over pitching and catching, a dreadful love story involving Sex and the City castaway Kristin Davis catches us on the chin like a bad hop. One weepy scene begets another until the boy returns to the present, having learned lessons about life, love, and sharpened spikes. (The movies crazy-eyed Ty Cobb provides the only memorable moments.) If The Winning Season were a baseball card, it wouldnt make it into our stamp collection.
