The title of the latest Stephen King-novel-turned-TV spectacular, Desperation, could also describe the "retired" author's vain attempts at recreating his early flair for scare. In the movie, Desperation is actually a town in Nevada that provides the setting for ancient demon Tak (played shrewdly comedic by Hellboy Ron Perlman) to dream up creative ways to slaughter any townsfolk and unlucky travelers passing through. It's up to a group of survivors to find a way to escape, which seems more reasonable than sitting through this three-hour time block. C-listers like Tom Skerritt and Steven Weber are as tolerable as the lean dialogue will allow, but the script is better suited for schlocky airport paperbacks than minimally financed movies.
