The Skinny: The son of a police detective, Shawn Spencer (James Roday), uses his heightened observational skills to dupe the saps around him into believing he is psychic. He uses his "power" to solve crimes with his reluctant but faithful sidekick/straight man Gus (Dule Hill).
The Good: Back for a third season, this show knows better than to take itself too seriously. Although the season premiere introduces Shawn's mother (Cybill Shepherd) and a host of old mommy-daddy issues, the episode weaves in these more serious story lines brilliantly with the comedic one-two punch of Roday and Hill.
The Bad: Aside from the mom stuff, not a lot happens in this wandering episode. And the show suffers from our biggest pet peeve: telling us all the answers in the last two minutes without really showing us. Plus, it comes on at 10 on a Friday night.
Try It With Your Friends! The best scene in the season premiere features a squabble between Shawn and Gus when Gus says he's quitting. We won't say too much, but when the argument turns physical, Shawn goes "boneless." If you don't laugh, then you're watching the wrong show
