The Skinny: After a blockbuster freshman run and a mercifully truncated second-season wonkfest, this twisty superhero tale returns to try to win back fans and fan boys alike. In some ways ignoring Season 2 completely, this year's focus is on the baddies. (You've got company, Sylar!)

The Good: Half of the first hour (NBC only screened the first part of the two-hour premiere) reminded us of why we loved this show. A revived Sylar is back to his head-splitting ways, and like we said, there is little mention of the "Shanti virus" plot that derailed Season 2. We're hoping the second hour is some kind of blockbuster.

The Bad: The other half confused the shit out of us. Multiple characters are now traveling through time, and some of your old favorites have new powers that are more "Why?" than "Wow!" The show's also adding new heroes to an already bloated cast, and the whole thing felt very talky. We want to see some ass-kicking already.

Set Sale: Comic artist Tim Sale (whose work illuminated Season 1 and was vastly underused in Season 2) will have his work drawn on rocks this season, as an Isaac Mendez–type precog is discovered painting the future in Africa. Someone tell Brangelina to send him an easel.

Watch, Ignore, or Read a Book Instead? Watch it, at least for the yet-unseen second hour. If it still disappoints, then go see The Dark Knight again.
