While struggling to satisfy its hardcore fans, build its own myth, and bridge the originals much-praised authenticity with the sequels comparative slickness, Shadow of the Blair Witch comes up with a smashing idea: Shoot the sequel directly in the foot. It comes off as both a commercial and an apology.
See if you can follow this: Real Burkittsville residents decry the sequel as sensationalizing a real murder that took place because of the real hysteria surrounding the fake original movie. Got it? How bout this? They know that Blair Witch 2 is the over-budgeted sellout of a cool idea so theyre making that part of the point. While this might work if it were all played tongue firmly in cheek, the laughs are pretty unintentional and the realism that made the original work seems truncated by all this real movie/fake movie stuff.
