Sophomore slump, the dread of any successful TV series, isn’t an issue with South Park—Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, and Stan have only just reached the fourth grade. The Peanuts-gone-wrong show came out swinging last week, with a new character (the authoritative teacher Mrs. Chokesondick) and an apparent commitment to push—hell, shred—the envelope of good taste.

In addition to a Thanksgiving special (November 22) and a Masterpiece Theatre-trashing London jaunt with the effeminate Pip, South Park’s new season boasts a return visit with Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo (December 20).

If any fans fear that South Park may lose its edge, don’t worry. Even veteran viewers will ask, “Can they do that on television?” more than once this season. Like Richard Pryor and George Carlin, South Park disarms the audience with dirty jokes, and then heaps on the irony.
