The third season finale of Pit Bulls and Parolees  airs this weekend, and if you haven’t seen the show, you’re missing out on not only the most gut-wrenching and happy stories on TV, but also two of the hottest and hard working sisters in the country. The show follows the family of pit bull rescuers who not only help the neglected animals, but also, as the titles suggests, rehabilitate parolees.

Tough-as-nails mom Tia Torres gave her daughters Mariah and Tania a break from their busy day of dog saving and people rehabilitating at Villalobos Rescue Center to tell us the best and worst parts of saving the world’s most misunderstood animals.

Their Typical Day-

TANIA: We get up at 7 and walk dogs. Feed them by 8. The guys do the kennel work while I’m running errands and helping with the medications. And then walk some more dogs. We don’t stop until 9 at night. I need a vacation. A week of sleep would be amazing!

It Doesn’t Get Better-

TANIA: Going out on a rescue still shocks me now just as much now as the first day. It never gets easier. It actually gets harder because I’m dealing with it year after year.

Vacation?-

MARIAH: Our “vacations” are going out and traveling for work and rescuing dogs. That’s the only vacation we have.

Prepare to Weep-

TANIA: I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen dogs that had a hatchet taken to them, or dogs whose ears were cut off by scissors or burned with battery acid.  Every rescue is equally sad and crazy.

MARIAH: The worst one happened a long time ago. I was about 11.  A lady had show dogs but then she started doing drugs and completely boarded up the house and padlocked the kennels. She said people were out to get her. She took off. The dogs were there for a long time. No one could get to the dogs. They started eating the puppies. Finally people began shoving food into the kennels to try and feed them and then they called my mom in. She asked me to video tape it for evidence. We got some amazing dogs out of that rescue, but it was intense.

It’s Not all Doom and Gloom-

MARIAH: We give the dogs names to fit their personality. Right now we have Cheech and Chong. They’re a little slower and goofy than the others, so the name fits. And we have dogs with strong names. And dogs with dorky names, like Sloth.

Frequently Asked Question-

TANIA: The one we get a lot is, “Do pit bulls have locking jaws?” The answer is no. Their jaws don’t lock. They’re a strong breed, they’re a power breed, but they don’t have some switch that makes their jaw lock or unlock.

They’ve Heard It All Before-

TANIA: You get some people that are really excited because they love the breed. But you also get the jerks who come up to you and say, “How dare you!” and, “They eat children!” I let it roll off. I’m used to it. Every now and then I’ll argue back. I might kill ‘em with kindness and try to educate them. But you can’t please the world.

MARIAH: I had a cop tell me, “The only good pit bull is a dead pit bull.” What do you say back to a cop? You gotta take the high road. I tried to educate him, but he was just in la-la land.
