Yes, America, there is more to British TV comedy than silly walks and the Dead Parrot Sketch. The League of Gentlemen could be the funniest, meanest, most wickedly smart sketch comedy show ever produced. Imagine a quaint PBS-style slice of small-town English life, directed by David Lynch and played by a cast of ugly but wildly entertaining mental patients.

Even the shortest of each episode’s hilarious blackout bits could stand on its own. But before you know it, you’re drawn into a sick soap opera about a dead-end town of perverts, drunks, and sociopaths. What’s most surprising about this varied and deeply weird cast of characters is that they’re all played by just three actors. You’ll lose count after about 50, but some of the more popular regulars are Barbara, a transexual who’s only too willing to discuss the grisly mechanics of her surgeries; Herr Lipp, an enthusiastically perverted German high school teacher; and butcher Hillary Briss, whose homemade sausages are the stuff of terrifying rumor.
